  3. The flywheel
  4. supplies the
  5. momentum that keeps
  6. the crankshaft
  7. rotating between
  8. power strokes and
  9. provides a mount
  10. for the clutch
  11. pressure plate.  It
  12. looks like a large
  13. wheel which is
  14. attached to the
  15. crankshaft.

  17. The side of the
  18. flywheel attached
  19. to the clutch is
  20. smooth, allowing a
  21. controlled build up
  22. of friction between
  23. the clutch plate
  24. and pressure plate
  25. assembly.  The
  26. entire clutch
  27. mechanism is
  28. mounted on the
  29. flywheel with the
  30. clutch plate
  31. sandwiched between
  32. the flywheel and
  33. pressure plate.  A
  34. lubricated pilot
  35. bearing is placed
  36. in a hole in the
  37. center of the
  38. flywheel.  This is
  39. either a ball
  40. bearing or a bronze
  41. bushing and
  42. supports one end of
  43. the clutch shaft
  44. (transmission input
  45. shaft).  A ring
  46. gear surrounds the
  47. flywheel, which the
  48. starter motor
  49. turns.
