- The Flywheel
-
- The flywheel
- supplies the
- momentum that keeps
- the crankshaft
- rotating between
- power strokes and
- provides a mount
- for the clutch
- pressure plate. It
- looks like a large
- wheel which is
- attached to the
- crankshaft.
-
- The side of the
- flywheel attached
- to the clutch is
- smooth, allowing a
- controlled build up
- of friction between
- the clutch plate
- and pressure plate
- assembly. The
- entire clutch
- mechanism is
- mounted on the
- flywheel with the
- clutch plate
- sandwiched between
- the flywheel and
- pressure plate. A
- lubricated pilot
- bearing is placed
- in a hole in the
- center of the
- flywheel. This is
- either a ball
- bearing or a bronze
- bushing and
- supports one end of
- the clutch shaft
- (transmission input
- shaft). A ring
- gear surrounds the
- flywheel, which the
- starter motor
- turns.
